Wrapping Up 2011

Around the end-ish of each year I like to go back over the goals that I set for myself the previous year, before setting new goals for the year ahead. 2011 did not quite go as planned, but by no means would I consider it a failure. It was an interesting one.

1. Do things that terrify, embarrass, startle, and otherwise freak me out
I'd consider this the biggest success of all time. I ended a relationship that had been my absolute rock and place of consistency and security for three years. I moved into a place on my own for the first time in my life. I asked for a bigger raise at work (and got it!), I swam with a whale shark (briefly, in six foot seas and open water, and mildly panicked the entire time). Ultimately- I completely restructured my life, stopped shying away from the unfamiliar, and learned to start trusting my own gut more than ever before. It is not the journey that I had intended for myself by any means, but it has been the most significant.

2. Learn more about the joys of yeast and fermentation.
I'd call this questionable. While I started working with sourdough fairly early on in the year- in coming to terms with my gluten intolerance as well as moving into an apartment with the most inconsistent temperature range (ever!) I really let this one slip aside. Bread baking may not be a consistent thing for me, but my love for kombucha, kimchee, and all other things vinegary and mildly terrifying has not faded. 2012 might just be the perfect year for strange fermented things.

3. Go places, take classes, and make things.
2011 was: a gyotaku class in Portland, a four-week mushroom identification class through The Puget Sound Mycological Society, a very successful mushroom hunting trip, the best cupcakes I've ever made, two types of homemade cereal (granola, and amaranth). I also took swim lessons, made recipe after recipe of mediocre gluten free cookies, and spent a whole lot of time tromping around in the woods and mud.

4. Run a full marathon and start training for a triathlon.
Hah! Oops. While I did run my second half marathon (and cut 15 minutes off my previous time!) life really got in the way of any other training. An injury in October led to me having to wear this lovely thing for three weeks, and my foot still isn't fully healed. I'm signed up for my third half marathon this coming March, and will again aim to run my first full marathon in the next year.

5. Go somewhere I've never been before.
Success! Chimacum & Point No Point, Canon Beach, Whidby Island, Guemes Island (favorite!), Port Townsend, Crystal Mountain, and most wonderfully of all- La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico!

Did 2011 throw any surprises your way?

Link Love, and A Little Life Explaining

Okay, it's official. I have been trying to avoid making a dreaded "sorry I haven't been posting much" post- but I think I finally have to do it. So, you guys. I'm sorry I haven't been posting much. Believe me when I say that I think about it all the time. I miss my blog (weird, maybe) and I miss sitting down and writing out real posts and taking the time to edit photos and get excited about new upcoming adventures and projects. There is a lot (!) going on in my life right now- so much of it is so awesome- it's been a summer full of non-stop adventures so far. But it means that I'm not home much, and not really spending much time sitting down to think. I also totally scrapped my marathon training and feel kind of awful about it. So, it's not you. It's me. And I really do promise that I'm going to get better about posting- because I miss it more than I can explain without sounding like I'm talking about a past lover. Which is weird. So, for the sake of not being weird- let's just start here- with some of my favorite things that some of my favorite people have been doing.

- I will never get tired of Smitten Kitchen recipes. Ever. Flatbreads with Honey, Thyme, and Sea Salt sound like something that should only be served with fresh fromage blanc and local honey. That sounds like dinner tomorrow night.

- I have never made rice pudding. I really want to make it, though. I really want to make Risotto Rice Pudding with Brown Sugar and Vanilla from Joy the Baker. Like really, really badly. Really.

- Food In Jars has a seriously great recipe for Refrigerator Dill Pickles which are really great if you're intimidated by the full-blown canning process. These guys aren't intended to be shelf stable, so you don't need to worry about breaking jars or giving your friends botulism.

- Is it cheating to say that my favorite blog right now is my mamas? Her and my step-dad left just over three weeks ago and their years-long sailing trip! Check out their adventures as they cruise out of Alaska and down to Mexico (for now). They'll be stopping through Seattle in August, and I get to spend a week in La Paz with them come November!

- Excuse my language- but holy shit. Do you know what those are? No? Didn't think so. Those are Cinnamon Sugar Radish Chips from Pinch of Yum and my mind nearly exploded when I first saw them. I still haven't quite wrapped my mind around these- but I know that I need to make and eat them very, very soon.

What have you been doing and loving lately?

Wild & Homemade

Hi loves! It's "Ask the Intern" week on Questionland- which means that there's a whole section of questions targeted just at me! I'm focusing on all things homemade and wild and would love it if any of my readers stopped on by to pester me. While Questionland is Seattle based- you definitely don't need to live in Seattle to use it. Come check out Wild and Homemade Q&A!

New Goals for the New Year: 2011

I recently went back over my goals for 2010 and wanted to give myself a little bit of time to come up with some goals for 2011.  I prefer goals over resolutions, as they give me some direction and focus without being so dramatic.  It's no big deal if I sway in another direction halfway through the year, or if I focus on one more than any other.  The New Year coincides with my birthday, and so it really is the perfect time for me to plot out a little structure and direction.

1. Do things that terrify, embarrass, startle, and otherwise freak me out.  I can be both terribly shy and terribly calculated at times, and it doesn't really seem to do me any favors.  I'd like to get past this and be able to feel more free in my actions.  I told my entire yoga class on Wednesday night that I call myself "baby girl" in my head when I'm running as to be nicer to myself (rather than cussing myself out).  I then turned bright red and promptly shoved my water bottle in my face after I blurted it out.  It was tiny and silly, but kind of awesome.  I need more of that in my life.

2. Learn more about the joys of yeast and fermentation.  The end of 2010 had me falling in love with kimchee, falling off the kombucha homebrewing wagon, getting tired of store bought yogurt, acquiring a stand mixer with a bread hook attachment, and becoming fascinated with yeast as carbonation.  I'd also love to try my hand at making vinegar and working with sourdough, and I really think it might be time to dust off our homebrew kit and get down to making beer.

3. Go places, take classes, and make things.  Now that I'm equipped with a tiny car, a bright pink fishing pole, and a membership with the Puget Sound Mycological Society- I am unstoppable!  Well, getting there.  I've also signed up to take a gyotaku class next month in Portland, I just started a 6 week ashtanga yoga series, I'm starting swim lessons in March, and I'm really excited about the classes offered at ASUW Experimental College.  Non-stop!

4. Run a full marathon and start training for a triathlon.  I ran my first half marathon in November, and my second one is coming up in March.  I've really fallen in love with running, and the fact that running a full marathon sounds insane and impossible just makes me want to do it more.  The tri training will be dependent on how well my swim lessons go!

5. Go somewhere I've never been before.  This is a bit like #3, and I'm kind of sort of cheating on this one- as I already know that I'll be spending Thanksgiving in Mexico this year (hi Mom!), but ideally I'd like to make this a semi-regular thing.  I like the idea of trying restaurants in towns I've never been to.  Adventures in the name of food!

Have you made any goals or resolutions for 2011?

Wrapping Up 2010

Happy New Year lovelies!  I thought today might be the ideal time to look back over my not quite resolutions from last year, before I set any new ones for this year!

The best breakfast of 2010!

1. Learn how to make cheese.
- I actually kind of bombed this one.  While I did make a simple homemade goat cheese, it was the only cheese making adventure that I had in 2010.  For some reason I have a feeling that 2011 may involve something more.

2. Go back to school.
- I did!  I started taking online accounting classes at Bellevue College, and am now very slowly working my way through a bookkeeping certificate.  To be honest- I'm not in love with it, but it has been good for my job.  I'd like to take some more interesting classes this year, even if they aren't part of my program.

3. Get outside.  By outside I mean out of the city- and into the woods and dirt and ocean and mud.
- This definitely happened!  See: here, here, here (!!!), here, here, here, here, and here

4. Expand my horizons in the kitchen.
-  I can't say that I had a wild and crazy year in the kitchen- but it was a pretty darn good one.  I never did manage to get together a post about the catered lunch that I did in July.  It was fairly casual and wasn't huge- but was definitely a new experience for me.  Some of my favorite recipes of the year: Goat Cheese, Kale, and Beef Bacon Quiche (this is still a favorite- I made it on Christmas morning!), Wild Fennel & Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Blackberry and Lavender Muffins, Brown Sugar Lemonade with Sea Salt and Mint, Oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Lavender and Asiago, and Kale with White Beans and Bleu Cheese I really would have liked to have shared more recipes- so that may be something I work on this year.

5. Grow more food.
- Honestly. This was kind of a disaster.  I didn't really realize that our apartment patio gets about two total hours of sun, even in the middle of the summer.  All of my beautiful starts croaked within a month.  My container potatoes fared a bit better- but not really.  Unfortunately this is just one of those things that I'm going to have to give up on until we move into a different place.

6. Get a social life.
- I don't know.  I think I cheated at this one, considering that my two closest friends moved back to Seattle this year.  Double score!

7. Take a real vacation.  Really.  A real one.
- I would considering this a success.  Most of my vacations were over the course of two or three days- but it works for me!  I bought a car over the summer, and it made for a lot of really great weekend trips.

How do you feel about the year wrapping up?  Are you happy with how your year ended?

FESSup!

I realized tonight that I've never posted about the bike bags that I used to make under the name FESSup!  I say used to, because although I still make them now from time to time- it's not anything like it once was.

I started working on a bag tonight that I'm donating as an auction item for CARW's Duwamish Fundraiser this coming weekend, and it got me feeling a little nostalgic and inspired.  I've toyed with the idea of regularly making bags again, but haven't quite sold myself on it.  If I do start up again I won't be taking custom work, and will only being selling items as-is.  I've never done it for the money- so when all I was doing anymore was custom work- it took all of the creativity out of it for me as well.

I'll try to get some pictures of the bag up on my Flickr page before I send it off to its new home.  Here are some of my old favorites:

This was the first bag I ever put up for sale!  I ended up trading my friend Kyle for a bike wheel.

This bag is still spotted around Seattle from time to time.  If you know Ponch- you'll recognize it.  It's got to be at least three years old by now, and I can't believe it's still in one piece!

I actually cried while making this bag.  And they weren't tears of joy.  I was sick, and running out of time, and I realized right as I finished the last stitch that I had sewn one of the straps on the wrong way.  I love this bag now- but I hated it then!

Super giant custom bag for my friend Dustin- made to match his bike.

Custom bag for my friend Walker.  The checkered pocket in the front is made out material with titanium threads woven into it.  Super functional!

Have you ever stopped doing something that you loved, only to pick it back up again years later?  Any words of wisdom?

Feel Better

I have a confession to make.

My serious lack of blogging has had very little to do with being busy, and mostly to do with being in a terrible funk.

It drives me crazy to admit that it was mostly work related- but that's the flat-out truth.  Someone made a really nasty comment to me nearly a month ago- and instead of just blowing it off and moving on- I hung on to it, and my resentment towards that person and that comment turned into resentment towards my job.  Spending 40+ hours a week in an environment that made me feel completely miserable was an awful way to spend an entire month.  In turn I started to feel overwhelmed and frustrated over my home and social life, and even planning anything fun felt like an awful chore to me.  I kept trying to shake it, but I wasn't allowing myself to just stop feeling crappy.  I'm sure that our gloomy June and trying to function in a still half-packed apartment didn't make things much better- but normally those things alone don't feel so overwhelming.

This weekend seemed to have just knocked all of the grumpiness right out of me.  I got my ass completely kicked carrying an overloaded bag.  I'm sunburnt and my feet are blistered.  I came home with hair full of sand and salt water and bonfire smell.  I didn't think about work, or our messy apartment, or care about the weather.  Our one rainy morning just added a perfect spookiness to being on the ocean.  We ate sandy food, and slept in sandy tents, and my last pair of contacts seemed to glue themselves to my eyeballs.  We drank creek water and ate food that hadn't been properly chilled and never got sick.  I didn't get drunk or watch fireworks for the first July 4th in years.  And it was wonderful.

I always seem to want to hole up when I feel bad.  I forget that going outside and allowing myself to completely check out is often the only thing that can really help.

One-Week Cleanse Breakdown

light n' airy by CarolynsHope is exactly how I feel!

Today is the last day of my week-long cleanse, and I thought I'd go over a few things that people have been asking me.  Overall I have been really happy with the way it went, and I would absolutely recommend it to someone who has the discipline to really stick to the diet and use the kit the way that it is intended (aka taking all of the supplements and tinctures as directed).  There are three different ways to use the kit- as a more intense one week cleanse, an easier two week cleanse, or an intensive 5 day juice cleanse.  These are all options when using the same kit.

I used the Fresh Start Kit from The Herbalist which is a local herbal medicine manufacturer.  They have a retail store on NE 65th St. near the Roosevelt/Greenlake area.  I actually picked my kit up from Metropolitan Market in Lower Queen Anne, near my office.  Their price was a touch higher, but it saved me the pain of a long bus ride so I thought it was worth it.  For the record- neither Dandelion Botanical in Ballard, nor Mother Nature's in Lower QA carry the kits.  Super Supplements does but they kind of freak me out.

Q: Why are you cleansing?
A: Short answer: Because I feel like crap.  Long answer: because my allergies are the worst they've ever been, I'm tired all the time, my digestive system is always out of whack, and I'm having a hard time focusing on pretty much anything.  Really- there are a million ways and a million different reasons to cleanse.  A lot of people don't believe in the benefits of cleansing at all.  I eat a clean, healthy, and balanced diet most of the time and rarely ever have sugar or carb crashes and generally don't feel lethargic or sluggish from overeating.  I am physically active and drink plenty of water.  Despite all of this- I am still conscious of the fact that my body just doesn't feel quite right.  Here is a good list for knowing if it's a good idea to cleanse.

Q: Do you feel any different?
A: I didn't until day two- but when I did it was like "BAM!"  My energy level has gone way up, my entire body feels lighter, my thoughts are more clear and it's easier for me to stay focused.  The most intense difference has been immediately after taking the three tinctures- which is not surprising.  It feels intense for about 20 minutes and then begins to taper off.  It isn't like peak highs and lows though- it more or less lasts the entire day.  I never felt like I was crashing or "coming down".  My body just feels happy.

Q: Is it a fast?  What are you eating?
A: No, it's not a fast- and I am eating a lot!  It is very heavily based around whole vegetables and fruits, as well as fruit juices- when I first looked through the cleansing guide I was a little panicked by the list of cleanse approved foods.  Honestly- I ate a lot of potatoes.  But I also ate a lot of other things.  The key is to eat large portions so you're still getting enough calories.  I also drank juice about 6 times a day.  My day in meals usually went something like this:

Breakfast: Brown ricecake with almond butter.  Sometimes I'd drizzle it with honey as a treat.
Snacks: Fruit, carrots with hummus or almond butter, and raw nuts.
Lunch: Brothy soup with lots of veggies and grains (amaranth), or potato salad made with Bragg's liquid aminos, olive oil, seaweed, shredded carrot, and black pepper.
Dinner: Huge salad with vegan dressing, herbed potatoes (courtesy of my wonderful boyfriend), fish (cold water and wild- this is technically a "first time cleanse/cheater" food), and more veggies.  A lot of my meals crossed over from dinner to lunch and vice-versa.  I'd make a big portion of something and save it for another meal.
Beverages: Water, herbal tea, 100% fruit juices (Trader Joe's was a lifesaver for juice), and I did sneak kombucha a few times, but probably shouldn't have.

There were a few days where I had non-cleanse approved foods- and I felt the difference.  One day was soup that had a few beans in it, and another was lentils.  I felt okay about eating them, knowing that they were still healthy choices regardless- but my digestive system was apparently not in the same mindset.  I also snuck a few bites of dark chocolate here and there, and had ceviche with corn chips one night- but it didn't seem to do me any harm.  I'd keep yourself in check with that one, though.  The idea is the be as gentle on your digestive system as possible.

Q: What can't you have?
A: In short: alcohol, refined sugars, caffeine, gluten, dairy, most meats (free range and organic are considered approved foods for the first-time cleanser), most grains (rice, oats, barley etc.), beans, canned foods, eggs, popcorn, processed foods, iodized salt, vinegar, and artificial sweetners, among a few other things.

Honestly- it looks and sounds like a lot.  I had to plan for a few days before I could commit myself to doing this cleanse.  Read over their cleansing guide very thoroughly before making up your mind about doing it.  Plan meals ahead of time and keep in mind that the better you stick to the approved foods- the better you will feel.  Take the time to cook and pack your lunches and snacks.  The last thing you want to do in the middle of this is get frustrated and give up halfway through.  Remind yourself that it's only temporary if it helps.

There are a few contradictions in the food guide- hummus is okay, but beans aren't; rice cakes are okay but rice is out; quinoa is listed but amaranth isn't, etc.  Just use your best judgment and figure out what works best for you and your cleanse.

Q: What are the supplements like?  How often/what are you taking?
A: Some of them aren't bad at all and I enjoyed taking them.  Some of them... were really foul.

Intestinal Rescue was the worst for me.  You mix a tablespoon of powder in a glass of juice or water and drink it twice a day on an empty stomach.  Then immediately follow it with an 8oz glass of water.  I would do this first thing in the morning when I got up, and then right away when I got home- before eating any snacks or dinner.  I always mixed with juice (I tried it with water once and wanted to cry) and would shake the hell out of it in a canning jar and then chug it down as fast as I could.  It's gross- but it's worth it.  Just trust me.  You won't feel very hungry after drinking this and it's okay to eat a light breakfast or snack.  Just make sure you don't go all morning without food.

Renew-U, Blubberwack, and New Brain Choice are all liquid tinctures that you take together three times a day.  I was also taking these in juice, and found them to be the most pleasant.  They have a slightly alcoholic taste, but the herbs themselves are fairly mild tasting.  I would take these first in the morning- after Intestinal Rescue and before eating, right before lunch, and then sometime in the evening- after Intestinal Rescue, and before bed.

Renew-U Tea isn't bad, and was easy to drink throughout the day.  You need to drink 4 cups of this, so I would make it in a big pot in the morning, and then pour it into a Nalgene to take with me and drink throughout the day.  I actually enjoyed it more at room temperature.  I know a lot of people aren't tea drinkers- so if you find the taste off-putting just chug it and be done!

LBT Caps aka Lower Bowel Tonic are exactly what you think they are!  I'd take 3 caps right before bed with a small glass of water.  Seriously- don't take these and then dilly-dally around for half an hour.  Take them and then go to bed.  You will be thoroughly impressed in the morning.  I promise.

Q: Anything else worth knowing?
A: Go to bed when you feel tired.  Don't venture too far away from a restroom for an extended period of time.  Drink a ton of water.  Don't exercise too hard.  Don't treat this like a diet- make sure you're eating enough calories.  Pay attention to your body and do whatever you feel is best.  Don't bother cleansing if you aren't committed to taking better care of yourself in the long run.  Do your research.  Don't allow yourself to cheat consistently- it's pointless.  And lastly- take all of my advice with a grain of salt.  This is just what worked for me and how it made me feel.  Read the entire cleansing guide, read all of the directions, and pay attention to your body.

Any other questions?  Let me know!  I'd be happy to answer them, share recipes, and tell you all about my poops.

School and Slacking

While I am not a fan of the "sorry I haven't been blogging!" type of post- that's exactly what this is!

I started taking part-time online classes last week and I can't believe how frazzled my brain feels.  I guess it's valid to take into consideration the fact that I'm working full time, I haven't been in school for nearly three years, and on top of that I'm taking classes that have nothing to do with sewing or going on trips to Vegas!  (For those of you who don't know- the last time I was in school it was for fashion design- hence the significantly more entertaining curriculum than my current bookkeeping courses.)  I'm hoping that once I settle a bit more into this schedule and learn how to deal with the fact that I can't just bake and play with the bratty cats when I get home from work- my blogger brain will turn back on.

In the meantime... here is what I'd rather be doing:

Maybe replace the Tecate with a ginger ale.

It Lives!

Oops, just kidding!  Apparently my kombucha SCOBY is healthy and happy- Amanda from Portlife gave me a little guidance via Twitter- "It should smell vinegary, not moldy or "gross" in general. A contaminated one usually has visible black/green mold, also." - and as it turns out mine smells just fine and is just bubbly- not moldy.  I'm really glad I didn't throw it out, and the funny thing is that in the past few days it has really started to look like it's supposed to.  I guess I need to go back and re-write my last entry!

I'm trying to get my schedule in order to be able to attend this class on edible and medicinal weeds through Seattle Tilth.  It falls on Easter Sunday which isn't really a problem aside from the fact that Naked Girls Reading, making rabbit stew, and a possible family engagement are all falling on the same day.  The horror!  I will find a way to work it all out.

Also!  I added a little Facebook fan box over there on the right.  Go check it out!

Price Yourself

Yowch. Major blow to the ego.

Inspired by a zinger of a comment from a customer of mine about pricing because- "it's just a __________. I didn't expect it to be that much".

I price my labor based on two things- the first being what the average going rate is for sewing/tailoring/working with specialty fabrics, and the second being what I believe that my time is worth.

Based on what I sell most of my work for- I know that I'm not asking too much. This project happened to be rather large and time consuming- thus the "high" price.

So, now I'm curious. How much would you sell yourself for? This pertains to any skill-set at all. Whether it's playing/writing music, baking the best cookies ever, being really good at doing laundry, or anything else that tickles you the right way. How much do you feel your skills are worth?

Me? I'm priceless. But that breaks down to about $33/hr on an invoice.

Perfect Foods

This conversation took place at least twice over the weekend. We were trying to figure out our top five "perfect" foods. They had to be a single item- not a dish- and it helped if your reaction to it was something along the lines of "This is fucking genius!" This is my list, full of stolen pictures. I also can't say that they are actually in order, but they all have major staying power in my life. They also aren't always my "favorites", but I still think that they are perfect.

Asthma Ain't Cool.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I started thinking sometime last summer that I might have exercise induced asthma, but for the most part I figured I was either A. pushing myself too hard, or B. developing new allergies that would sort themselves out (right???). HAHA. Foolery.

Last night while riding the whole two miles to Matao's work, I nearly fell over dead riding up to Phinney. Yes, two whole blocks up a moderate grade. SOMEONE accused me of just being out of shape- but for craps sake I'm not THAT bad. I finally did a little research today and talked to my mama a bit (who was diagnosed with adult onset exercise induced asthma a few years back) and a lot of things started to click.

My main frustration with it (especially not knowing for sure) is that I have strong legs and decent stamina, but more and more often lately it's been hard for me to keep my lungs in check with what the rest of my body is trying to do. I'll finish a ride and not have any muscle fatigue at all, yet feel like I'm about to hyperventilate and fall over dead from lack of oxygen.

SWEET!

I guess the good news now is that I at least know that it's treatable. I still need to do the whole dreaded "finding a doctor" bit- but either way I feel a lot better.

Cool kids use inhalers, right? YEAH!

Back On My Bike: Day 2

This was actually yesterday, but posting wasn't really an option at that point in time. Damn work, why you always crampin' my style???

I actually had a little muscle fatigue from riding on Monday, which made me feel insanely out of shape. Yay!

Something that I'm still having an issue with is eating on the mornings that I ride. I never quite mastered it in the six months that I was commuting every morning and now I'm trying to focus on it a bit more since it makes a huge difference for me.

I usually try to eat something small before I leave- a muffin, piece of toast with almond butter, a small bowl of Kashi with almond milk... something along those lines. Then I'll usually eat something else once I'm at work. Usually instant oatmeal or a granola bar. Yesterday I ate half of a bran muffin right before I left, and then felt like absolute hell when I got to work. It was about another hour before I ate a whole grain bagel, but it made a huge difference.

My body seems to be really sensitive about my blood sugar levels, and if it's low I completely crash. It's hard when I'm riding first thing, especially since I'm not usually very hungry for a while after I ride. I'm used to eating right when I get up- but I always have a small breakfast and then don't eat again until lunch, which sometimes isn't until 1 or 2.

My office has granola and protein bars, as well as raw nuts and (usually) fruit on hand, but I find that I hate most pre-packaged food, and fruit and nuts just don't always cut it.

Blah blah blah blah blah boring. Basically what it comes down to is that I need to start keeping a food journal and figuring out what works the best with my body. Except that sounds really boring to me so I probably won't do it. Hah.

------------------

In other, non health, but bike related news- I'm working on a project right now for Davidson which is pretty fantastically amazing. Watch out, suckafool.

25 Things

This was one of those annoying things that kept being spread around Facebook like the herp. I was ignoring it for the most part, but I got a little bored this afternoon and went for it. It was actually kind of fun, but then again I also really like talking about myself. So, here. You should do it, too, so we can be twinzies.

25 things about me:

1. I love all things to do with the ocean. Seafood, sea smells, sea monsters, mermaids... you know... the usual. I feel lost and out of place when I'm not near the water.

2. I have never been on vacation to anywhere "exciting". I used to only come to Seattle, but now I live here so I just go to Portland. I don't really care about vacation destinations... I just want to see and do things that are different from what I've already experienced.

3. My two top front teeth are fake. I think everyone who has known me for the past year knows that- but a lot of people that I've known for longer have no idea. I have perfect teeth now, but I think braces would have been cheaper. Drunk biking isn't always a good idea.

4. I almost only drink water or tea. I hate soda and most juice.

5. The only "foreign" country I've been to is China. My last job was as an assistant buyer and designer for a Seattle based clothing company and our clothes were manufactured in China. I went for 12 days and it was hands down the strangest experience of my entire life. I want to go back again when I'm not working.

6. I am the most horribly un-athletically inclined person... ever. I hate most sports, and the only physical activity that I sincerely enjoy is cycling.

7. I've been hit by cars twice in the past year while riding my bike. Well, technically the second time I hit the car, but they cut me off and then slammed on their brakes. Then they yelled at me for hitting them and drove off. Nice!

8. I usually have no concept of how short I am. My boyfriend is a giant and I don't feel like I'm much smaller than he is unless I'm standing right next to him.

9. I really love my job, even though I complain about it a lot. I love working in the seafood industry for some reason. I can't seem to escape. It makes no sense considering that I went to school for fashion design- but I don't really care.

10. I got my first business license last year. It's for my messenger bags and bike goods. It's really weird to me for some reason.

11. I really want to publish a cookbook someday.

12. I love driving and I really miss it sometimes, but I am so much happier now that I don't own a car.

13. I am afraid of really obscure things. I also believe that thinking that something will go wrong will cause it to- so I try to pretend like I don't worry about anything.

14. I hate secrets and don't have any of my own. Only other peoples, and I don't like the idea of them.

15. I believe that there is a big difference between the people who are meant to be in your life, and the ones that you choose. I also think that if you look hard enough it becomes obvious which is which.

16. I make my own granola because I am a giant hippie. I also hate sugary store bought crap.

17. I am vegan/pescetarian (I eat seafood but no other meat or dairy). It isn't for "animal rights" reasons though. I just feel healthier this way. I do eat very small amounts of dairy from time to time, but I never buy it or prepare it for myself. I miss moose meat and goat cheese, but that's about it.

18. I have a very strong scent memory and have had random moments in the past few years where I have almost burst into tears or started laughing because of a familiar smell.

19. I love cooking for people- although I freak out every time I make something new and assume that people will hate it. So far that's never happened.

20. I talk to my mom almost every day. Which is more than I did when I still lived in Alaska. I talk to my dad maybe once a month, but it seems to work okay for us.

21. My boyfriend is amazing. He came home to Alaska with me in September for my dads wedding and endured my insane family and shitty Alaskan weather for four days. He puts up with all of my crap and somehow still manages to love me. He may actually be insane.

22. I almost never drink or go out anymore, which is a drastic change from my life the past two years. I'm so much happier this way, though. I like being at home. I miss my old life a lot sometimes, though.

23. I believe in ghosts but not in the Hollywood sense. I don't believe in heaven or hell, but I do believe that there is some sort of afterlife. Religion has never had a place in my life and I don't feel that I am lacking anything because of that. I am a good person without it.

24. I hate watching TV.

25. My brother and I used to hate each other, but now I feel like he's one of the most amazing and wonderful people in my life. I trust his judgment over just about anyone else's and know that we'd both do anything for one another.

Mystery Solved!

Remember this?

About a month and a half ago, my friend Matt sent me a picture text with a photo of an ad on a bus in Minneapolis. It was nearly identical to a photo of myself that was taken a few years ago by a local photographer- David Hiller.

At that point I was pretty much convinced that it was actually me. So was everyone else that I showed it to. It kind of freaked me out, but it was more funny than anything else.

Roll around to today- bored at work and I remember that Matt sent me the link to their website so I could get a better look at it. Even then it still looked like me. Finally I decided to be a crazy person and just e-mail the company and ask them about it.

Verdict:

NOT ME. Although insanely creepy, still. I have a blue-eyed twin somewhere in the world. Too bad I'm not blond anymore.
